Welling United 1-2 Weymouth

Bottom of the table Weymouth claimed their second victory over Welling United this season.

At the start of October, Welling travelled to Dorset in the F.A. Cup and were well beaten, and again in this league game at Park View Road the Wings came away with nothing.

Keelan O’Connell might have done better in the opening minutes when shooting wide after Tom Blair’s low cross was knocked out into his path. O’Connell had another opportunity soon after but was thwarted by two brave blocks.

However, it was Welling who went ahead. Chi Ezennolim did well down the left-hand side before pulling it back to Stefan Payne and he diverted it into the bottom corner.

Yaser Kasim then found space and shot from the edge of the area. His shot was beaten out by Zaki Oualah, and the Weymouth goalkeeper recovered quickly to smother it. Then, at the other end, Bradley Ash made space for himself, but fired over.

Kasim intercepted a clearance and strode forward, only to shoot just wide of the post then, at the other end, Welling captain James Dunne was cautioned for a foul on the edge of the penalty area.

Myles Roberts was equal to Tom Blair’s free kick when tipping it over. However, from the corner Weymouth scored. O’Connell delivered to the near post and Brendan Wilson lost his marker to head home despite Roberts’ best efforts to keep it out.

Roberts then made a brilliant save when tipping Blair’s pile-driver onto the bar and over. O’Connell picked out Ahkeem Rose with the corner but he headed wide.

However, it was Welling who might have gone ahead just before the half time break. A good move saw it reach Medy Elito. He might have shot but instead laid it into the path of the better placed Taylor Maloney whose attempt to pass it inside the far post was just off target.

Immediately after the interval, Welling thought that they had retaken the lead. Payne fired home after controlling Maloney’s pass however the referee spotted an infringement, and the strike was ruled out.

Roberts then dived full length to turn Luke Nippard’s shot round the post before getting down well to save a long-range drive from Tom Bearwish. O’Connell surged forward, eased in, but shot wide then a short free kick routine allowed Blair an opportunity from wide out that was saved by Roberts with a double fisted punch.

Finally. Weymouth went ahead, but bizarrely from a Welling corner. Maloney’s delivery was headed out and quickly moved on to Ash. He burst down the left wing and when the already booked Dunne couldn’t risk fouling him, Weymouth found themselves three on one. Ash kept calm and worked it to Rose who finished calmly.

Matters got worse for Welling six minutes later when Roberts burst out to tackle Ash, was deemed to have fouled him, and was shown a red card.

Welling still had one substitution left and a goalkeeper on the bench so Elito was sacrificed with Kai McKenzie-Lyle brought on.

Bearwish had a shot deflected wide and Blair fired over with better options available but despite being short-handed, Welling came close to rescuing a point. Payne worked himself into a good position but fired work before Maloney came desperately close in injury time when his shot crashed back off the bar.

Warren Feeney now has work to do to prepare his Welling team for the difficult trip to Bath City on Friday evening.
