Danny Bloor’s Welling United suffered the pain of conceding a ninety-ninth minute decider against Chelmsford City.
There are few better feelings in football than scoring a last minute winner but there are few worse than conceding in that fashion.
Mohammed Dabre had the first chance of the game for the visiting Clarets when Welling goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom scuffed a clearance to Samir Carruthers. He squared to Dabre but the wide player connected no better with his shot and it squirted wide.
David Kamara then had a great opportunity to mark his full league debut with a goal when he broke free of a shirt pull and burst away. However, Chelmsford goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi was out quickly to save at his feet.
In the fifteenth minute, Welling had another gilt-edged chance when Jephte Tanga crossed for Kamara who was tumbled in the box by Jazzi Barnum-Bobb. Will Wood was given the responsibility from the spot but Oluwayemi guessed right and made a good low save.
Anthony Wordsworth shot over for the Clarets and it was he who came closest to registering a shot on target for the visitors, five minutes before half time, when his attempt was blocked causing it to loop into Winterbottom’s hands.
Charlie Ruff replaced Wordsworth just before half time and there was sufficient time for him to try his luck with a spectacular flying overhead shot that went well over.
After the break Dabre pulled back for Josh Castiglione but his reaction header flew over then Eze Ebuzoeme was well off target with a long range effort.
Tanga continued to cause problems for the Clarets and his shot from a tight angle clipped the outside of the post.
Just after the hour mark, Chelmsford went ahead. Samir Carruthers hooked it out to Dabre and his low cross was tucked home by Ruff.
Ben Brookes had a chance to make it two when he stole in unopposed at the far post to send a header towards the bottom corner. However, Winterbottom got across to make a wonder save.
It was then Welling’s turn to go close when Kareem Isiaka broke down the left hand side before cutting in. He rounded Oluwayemi but his shot was cleared off the line by Frankie Terry, one of two defenders who had got back to cover. It wasn’t cleared completely and came out to Amadou Kassarate but the Clarets’ goalkeeper got down and saved his shot well.
There were seven minutes left on the clock when Welling levelled. James Vaughan did superbly to cross for Kain Adom. He moved it into a shooting position before firing into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.
Both teams were then reduced to ten men. Kassarate said something that displeased the referee and was shown a second yellow card. Then Terry flew in on a challenge that left Tanga in a heap right in front of the home team dugout and he was shown the red card.
Castiglione almost won it in injury time but his shot came back off the post and Brookes smashed the rebound well over.
However, there was still time for a sting in the tail. Welling won a corner and threw men forward looking for a winner but it was cleared allowing Chelmsford to counter down the right hand side.
They forced it out to Castiglione and he made no mistake when finding the bottom corner.
Bloor will now have to pick his team up ahead of their long trip to Taunton Town on Saturday.
