Welling United’s hopes in claiming their first victory of the season were dashed as Woking plundered a late equaliser at Park View Road.
Harry Beautyman’s 33rd minute goal was a little against the run of play after which the Welling defence ensured goalkeeper Lee Butcher had little to do until they conceded a leveller with nine minutes remaining.
Loui Fazakerly had an excellent game at the back and was soon in action making a vital interception with Scott Rendell ready to pounce.
Butcher made an outstanding save from Josh Payne, via the post, at the cost of one of a succession of Woking corners, and Fazakerley was called into action again clearing off the line.
The first spark from Welling came from a Beautyman shot that was miscued wide but if it was a warning, it was one of which Woking failed to heed.
Jake Gallagher picked out the run of Beautyman and sent him clear of the defence. The attacking midfielder took full advantage by lobbing the onrushing Aaron Howe before holding off two defenders to slot home.
Gallagher was in action at the other end just before the break, timing his tackle perfectly to clear from John Goddard.
Joe McNerney was cautioned immediately after the break before Welling were forced into making a change with Barney Williams replacing Jamal Fyfield.
McNerney took a risk with a very heavy challenge on Beautyman that verged on the reckless but the referee deemed it fair and waved play on.
Williams came agonisingly close to notching his first goal for Welling when his 35 yarder fizzed beyond the angle with Howe well beaten.
After Afolabi Obafemi was cautioned for not retreating from a free kick, another measured Gallagher through ball put Tyrone Marsh in but Howe was out quickly to smother the shot.
Kieron St Aimie flicked Chris Bush’s ball on but Howe was first to claim as substitute Jon Nouble closed in.
Young Sam Corne, making his debut, was cautioned for a foul before Welling’s defence was breached.
Whilst many in the crowd were wondering why St Aimie was penalised on the half way line, Woking launched the free kick forward, Welling failed to clear and substitute Adam Newton finished to claim a share of the spoils.
