Kodi Lyons-Foster’s first goal for Welling United rescued a point from their game with Chippenham Town.
In a game that the Wings will feel that they should have won, they were indebted to their centre back’s close range finish to ensure that they did not end up empty handed.
Owen Windsor had a shot saved easily by Myles Roberts before Welling had a chance when a poor clearance fell into the path of Stefan Payne. His shot was scrambled round the post unconvincingly by Bluebirds goalkeeper.
Luke Russe shot wide for the visitors from long distance then Welling had a chance when Ade Azeez drew a good near post save out of Henry. Payne then came even closer with a shot from outside the penalty area which beat Henry but came out off the base of the post.
Craig Fasanmade got on the end of a slick Chippenham move but his near post shot was turned around the post by Roberts, then Spencer Hamilton headed wide from the corner.
Soon after James Dunne missed a great chance to open his Welling account. Azeez held it up well and played in George Alexander. He looked up and found the Welling captain but he drilled his effort wide from the edge of the area.
Alexander then sent Azeez away and he was just about to pull the trigger when Aaron Simpson got back to time his tackle perfectly.
Roberts made the last save of the half when keeping out Windsor’s shot from a wide angle.
After the half time interval Payne appeared to have been pushed in the back when rising to meet Amadou Kassarate’s cross however the referee was unmoved then Caine Bradbury went down in the other area with the same result.
Russ tried his luck with a volley from the edge of the area that Roberts saved before the visitors went ahead. Bradbury’s shot was pushed out by Roberts and Alex Bray was quickest to react to fire home from close range.
It took Welling until twelve minutes from time to create another clear cut chance and they made it count when they levelled. Payne sent Chi Ezennolim away down the left wing and he crossed deep for Lyons-Foster to finish at the far post.
There were no further chances until injury time when a cross was half cleared as far as Dunne but he was eased off balance and skied his shot well over.
On Tuesday, Welling end their run of three home games in eight days when they host Hemel Hempstead Town.
