Although not at their creative best Welling United claimed a vital three points when beating Chippenham Town.
They came out quickly and Dipo Akinyemi shot over from out wide before Chippenham showed their intent with a quick break and Chi Ezzenolim made a great clearance when Jordan Young had looked to be in.
Ezzenolim was then in action at the other end and his fierce shot was blocked with the Welling team being unsuccessful in their claims for a penalty.
Danny Parish let fly from twenty-five yards but it flew just wide then Chippenham came close when Alex Bray was sent clear down the inside left channel but his shot was saved brilliantly by Jack Sims with Arthur Penney tidying up.
Oluwasegun Lawal had a shot saved easily by Sims before Ade Shokunbi beat his man well but placed his pass just behind Parish who would have been through on goal. Akinyemi brought a difficult ball down well but he tried to guide it home and Will Henry was able to get down to save.
Six minutes after the half time interval, Welling went ahead. Akinyemi threaded a through ball behind the defence for Shokunbi and although Joe Hanks made a half block, the Welling midfielder was too strong and fired home.
Alefe Santos D’Abadia got to the bye-line and sent in a fierce cross that Sims held well before he again found space but fired high and wide. Young then played Luke Russe in but in taking it round Sims, the angle became tight and he could only shoot into the side netting.
Will Richards was cautioned for a foul but Akinyemi tried to be cute with the free kick and ended up fouling a Chippenham player who looked to break quickly, and the referee’s yellow card was again brandished.
Sims twice made regulation saves from Young before Akinyemi’s powerful shot was deflected sufficiently to take the sting out of it and Henry saved.
Brad Stevenson then came close to making the game safe when his initial shot was beaten back out to him and he followed up with a shot that was cleared off the line miraculously by Danny Greenslade.
Another cute free kick failed when Stevenson played it behind Parish and Chippenham might have made Welling pay in injury time when a deep cross found Bray, who had lost his marker, but he headed wide.
