Victory over Aldershot left Welling United sitting in seventh place approaching a quarter gone of their first season back in the top tier of non league football.
Fifteen minutes had elapsed when the first real opportunity of the match arose and Alex Dyer made it count. Latching onto a blocked clearance he arrowed his twenty yard shot beyond Aldershot goalkeeper Glenn Morris and into the bottom corner.
Manny Oyeleke almost made an instant response but his free kick, awarded for a foul by Jake Gallagher for which he was cautioned, flashed agonisingly wide.
Blaine Hudson caused distress in the Aldershot defence from Jack Obersteller’s free kick but they managed to hack the ball away.
Jordan Roberts was cautioned for Aldershot for a foul but chances were still few and far between.
Morris tipped over a Dyer cross and Ross Lafayette headed a Loui Fazakerley cross wide of the near post as Welling had the better of the exchanges leading up to half time.
Kurtis Guthrie brought down a long ball but saw his shot saved comfortably in the last chance of the half then headed over early in the second period,
Hudson headed over following good work by Lee Clarke and Fraser Franks before Matt Paterson missed a good chance for Aldershot but clipped his first time effort beyond Lee Butcher but wide of the near post.
Dyer headed wide and Lafayette saw a shot blocked by Jake Goodman before Aldershot stepped up the pace. Franks and Fazakerley were both drawn into fouls that earned them bookings but the visitors struggled to create clear cut chances.
Butcher and Franks combined to keep out Brett Williams and Mark Molesley, also booked earlier, was blocked by Gallagher before substitute Loick Pires made a vital goal line clearance.
Aldershot failed to create another opening and Welling saw out the closing minutes comfortably.
