Whilst results are not everything in pre-season, there is no doubt that Bromley manager Neil Smith went home far happier than his Welling counterpart Mark Goldberg.
Although the first half was fairly evenly matched, visitors Bromley over-ran Welling in the second period and won comfortably.
In the opening stages, Welling looked good .Danny Waldren and Sam Hatton (twice) had shots at goal without testing Alan Julian.
At the other end, Chris Lewington claimed an effort from Dave Martin before Blair Turgott had a shot deflected onto the post.
He was not to be denied however, and broke the deadlock in first half injury time, finishing after a shot was beaten out to him.
After the break, Lewington made a fine save to thwart George Porter on his first appearance against his former club.
Sam Corne came close for Welling when his effort flew back off the crossbar but Bromley were soon on the attack again and Lewington made a good stop from Turgott.
The relief for Welling was short lived, however, as Adam Cunnington finished well after more good work from Turgott.
Jack Holland headed home Bromley’s third from Martin’s free kick.
Substitute Bradley Goldberg increased his father’s teams’ woes with a fine finish for a fourth and might have added another shortly after.
Just as he had done in first half stoppage time, Turgott scored an injury time goal at the end of the match. Having been felled himself, he took the responsibility to fire home from the penalty spot.
Despite having seen his team score five times, Smith heaped praise on his defence having set out to build on a clean sheet. “I was really pleased with my back four today. We had to match Welling for their enthusiasm and their effort and then we had to come out for the second half ans show a dominance.”
On the possibility of signing trialist Turgott, Smith confirmed “We’d love to. Hopefully by Monday, fingers crossed, there might be some good news.”
Although a five nil scoreline was hard for Welling manager Goldberg, he was not too disheartened and was happy with most of the first period. “I was relatively pleased with the way that we started the game. Up until we conceded with a minute to go until half time, I thought we were well organised without really causing them too many problems.
“At half time, for the protection of our captain Sean Francis, we changed our centre half pairing with a trialist and Dean Leacock. We got ourselves a goalscoring opportunity, hit the crossbar, and if you score the goal, confidence grows.
“Not paint over the cracks, we had a certain amount of players today, in the second half, that we were looking at. The bottom line is that we learned in the second half about the players we want to keep, and those we don’t.”
“Putting together a completely new team, for where we are right now, I think we’ve done an amazingly good foundation for where we want to go.”
