Although Welling United gave a good account of themselves, Billericay Town’s experience helped them to victory at Park View Road.
It would be fair to say that the final score-line was harsh on the Wings but the team from Essex demonstrated just how vital it is to take your chances.
An early Jack Jebb free-kick drew a fine save from former Dartford goalkeeper Louis Wells. However, the custodian was helpless with the next one which flew out off the post. Sadly for Welling a diving Danny Mills was unable to head the rebound into the net.
At the other end, Billericay showed that they were a danger when Jake Robinson hooked over Dan Wilks, who was out quickly to hurry him, and it drifted wide.
Welling were soon on the attack again and a glorious free passing move created space for Brendan Kiernan to shoot but Wells did well to tip over, From Jebb’s corner, Richard Orlu rose well but could not guide his header on target.
Against the run of play the visitors went ahead. Sam Deering was pulled back by Thierry Audel and former Wing Adam Coombes converted from the spot.
Looking for a quick response, Bradley Goldberg met Jordan Gibbons’ deep cross but the angle was against him and he headed into the side netting.
Another former Wing, Danny Waldren, tried his luck from distance but Wilks made an easy save.
Wells tipped a Goldberg shot onto the crossbar but it wouldn’t have counted as the Welling striker was offside.
Mills headed wide from another good Gibbons cross as Welling finished the half on top.
After the break they continued to probe and Mills headed a Jebb cross over before Billericay made Welling pay with a second goal. Deering sent in a free kick and Simon Walton had too much room and he headed home comfortably.
More disappointing defending gave Billericay a chance to make it three and they did not waste it. Joseph Kizzi launched a hopeful ball forward and while the Welling defence hesitated Robinson stole in to prod beyond Wilks.
Robinson might have made it four but shot behind.
Despite the fact that the game looked to be over as a contest, Welling did not throw in the towel and Audel headed over from a Jebb corner. Jebb and Mills both drew saves out of Wells before substitute Gavin McCallum was well off target from a late twenty-five yard effort.
When Welling had a disappointing result last week they rebounded with an excellent win on Saturday and manager Steve King will be looking for another good reaction when Welling go to Torquay on Saturday for an away game against Truro City.
