Welling United 0-2 Weston Super Mare
Welling United 0-2 Weston Super Mare

Coming into the game Welling United, who had lost their previous games, looked to upset the odds against 100% Weston-super-Mare.

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Sadly for the Wings, Weston cruised to a comfortable win in keeping with the form book.

Dan Walker was introduced for his Welling United debut having been signed from Hemel Hempstead Town just 24 hours earlier.

He had an early opportunity but his shot didn’t have the power to beat Luke Purnell who was able to make a diving save.

After that, the visitors took command and it was only a matter of time before they went ahead. It was not a pretty goal, however, as Dayle Grubb’s free kick went through the wall and under Chris Lewington.

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Grubb and Shawn McClousky drew good saves out of Lewington, then McClousky got in behind again but shot over.

At the other end chances were few and far between and the nearest they came was when Sekani Simpson’s chested back pass had Purnell back tracking to save before it crossed the line.

Just before the break, Weston doubled their lead and made the game safe. Jake Mawford’s through ball split the defence and McClousky timed his run before slotting home his fourth goal of the season.

Mark Goldberg made a double change at the break looking to change to a 4-3-3 formation for the second half but it made little difference.

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Pierre Joseph-Dubois had a couple of chances off target before Jason Pope had a great chance to put the game beyond doubt. Left unmarked from a deep free kick, he failed to connect cleanly with his volley, and Lewington was grateful to make the save.

Walker had a long shot easily saved before breaking forward again. Disappointingly, there was no support for him so he had to go alone and Purnell made the save at the near post.

Once again, Lewington was called into action as McClousky again cut through the Welling defence.

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Having headed one chance wide, Harry Crawford drew a good save out of Purnell but that was the best Welling could muster as they slumped to their third consecutive defeat.

New boy Walker was disappointed to start with a defeat. “We started off relatively well. I could’ve made it a bit better scoring early but I miss-hit my shot a bit, the keeper made a half decent save, but I should score. From then, they scored slightly after and going in at half time two nil down, we had a lot to do.

“If the fans can stick with us, I think we will change it. It might take another game or two, or hopefully we will put it right on Tuesday. I think we can definitely go on a winning streak and climb up the table.”

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Talking about what Welling supporters can expect from him, Walker said “I like to utilise my pace. I like to try and get in behind people, get the ball into feet and go past people. Last season I got 12 or 13 assists from a wide area. This year I’m hoping to get at least that in goals and hopefully get the assists as well.”

Welling are back in action on Tuesday with a game at East Thurrock United.
