Coming into the match at Welling United, Hyde had recorded no wins, four draws and twenty-three defeats.
90 minutes later, their winless run was ended leaving Welling to pick up the pieces.
Wings manager Jamie Day has another challenge now as until this spell, he has had almost non-stop success at the helm.
Being forced into playing four centre halves and two full backs in the starting line up did not help, and the absence of leading scorer Ross Lafayette was a big blow, but Day would still have expected his team to have sufficient quality to see off the Skrill Premier basement team.
Although the scores were level at the break, the Wings goalkeeper, Lee Butcher, was the busier of the two so Welling had plenty of warnings.
Scott Spencer’s long range swirling shot was beaten out by Butcher, and Welling’s custodian was in the right place to claim Connor Hughes’ follow up.
Butcher was again in action when saving a 25 yard free kick from Josh Brizell. Baily Cargill tested the Tigers’ custodian, Lawrence Vigouroux and Blaine Hudson headed over from a corner but Hyde had two more chances before the break.
Hudson cleared off the line from Hughes, then the same Hyde player headed over from a corner when he should have done better.
Vigouroux was called into action early in the second half. First he had to turn over Connor McLaren’s sliced cross, then he tipped over a Kurtis Guthrie header.
Despite a succession of Welling corners, only another Guthrie effort required a save but it was slightly against the run of play when the deadlock was broken.
Louis Almond was given space in the 58th that gave Butcher no chance.
Lee Clarke and Kiernan Hughes-Mason were introduced into the Welling line up and a daisy cutter from the former produced a brilliant save from Vigouroux.
Another Clarke shot produced another flying save from the Hyde goalkeeper, and Hudson headed over from Cargill’s corner before the visitors added a second.
A corner was half cleared as far as Hughes and his dipping effort again left Butcher helpless.
Butcher made another excellent save from James Kirby before Welling should have been given a lifeline. Vigouroux got in a horrible mess with a defender and as Hughes-Mason prepared to slot the ball into an empty net he was barged unceremoniously off the ball. Incredibly referee Daniel Cook waved play on rather than pointing to the spot and brandishing his red card,
No further opportunities came their way, and the Welling players left the field of play licking their wounds.
