Another disappointing performance saw Welling United drop three points, this time at the hands of Hemel Hempstead Town.
In the three home games played over eight days, the Wings picked up just one point, courtesy of a late equaliser against Chippenham Town.
Although Warren Feeney’s team had plenty of possession in the first half, playing out from the back, they struggled to find the killer pass and to create opportunities. Montel McKenzie whipped in a cross for the visitors but it had too much bend on it and Nana Owusu was unable to get on the end of it.
Owusu then had an effort pushed away by Welling goalkeeper Myles Roberts before he shot over after Kory Roberts headed back a George Williams free kick.
Finally the Wings created an opening when Christie Pattisson, in for the suspended Amadou Kassarate, rifled in a shot that Hemel keeper Craig King could only knock out into the path of George Alexander. He tucked it home but had strayed into an offside position and it did not count.
Just before half time Alexander broke from his own half down the right wing. With no other option, he shot from a wide angle and King was able to beat it away.
After the break, Kyle O’Connor-Ajayi shot well over from fully forty yards for the visitors before Pattisson slung in a deep cross that King dropped but nobody was near enough to take advantage.
Hemel’s Luke Holness drilled a shot just wide from twenty yards before the Wings created another opening. Chi Ezennolim sent Medy Elito to the bye-line. He pulled it back to Alexander who found Stefan Payne but his curler brushed the crossbar on its way over with King struggling.
Brad Quinton’s Tudors then made the most of playing down the slope and pinned Welling back.
George Williams had a shot deflected wide before his long shot was saved easily. He again found space on the edge of the area and his shot was deflected into the path of Holness but Kodi Lyons-Foster made an excellent block.
Holness had a shot tipped over brilliantly by Roberts before George Williams fired a shot straight into the Welling goalkeeper’s midriff.
Ten minutes remained when Hemel finally broke Welling’s resistance. Owusu and Josh Williams caught them napping with a short corner move that picked out Roberts at the far post. His header back across struck the unfortunate Jamie Sendles-White on the head and flew into the net for an own goal.
Deep into injury time, Welling had one last goal effort but the angle was against Ade Azeez when he let fly and King was able to push it around the post.
As a result of the loss, Welling dropped to fifteenth in the table and will need to bounce back quickly to avoid being drawn into the relegation dog-fight.
