On a miserable afternoon at Park View Road, Welling spluttered to defeat against Hampton and Richmond Borough.
Luke Ruddick scored the only goal with just over fifteen minutes remaining as the Beavers recorded a good win on the road.
Any neutrals who were convinced to come along as part of a Non-League Day promotion will have been disappointed with the fare on offer, especially in the second half.
Early on it looked promising for Welling. Anthony Cook was pulled back and took the free kick himself but fired straight into the wall. Adam Coombes then put Cook through but Daniel Lincoln made an excellent low save.
Dean Inman’s angled ball caused problems but Coombes made an excellent defensive header before Welling again came close when Bradley Goldberg had a shot tipped over.
Danny Waldren headed over from Cook’s corner before Jake Gray shot straight at Dan Wilks has he came in from the left hand side.
Jefferson Louis was tackled superbly by Rob Swaine having looked to have got through and Inman did well at the other end after a weak punch by Lincoln from a Nathan Green cross.
Coombes appeared to be pulled to the ground in the penalty area but Welling’s appeals were to no avail.
As half time approached Coombes was brought down by Charles Wassemer but fired his low free kick wide before Waldren just missed the top corner from outside the penalty area.
Theo Widdrington fired a free kick after Wassemer again brought Coombes down before the Hampton centre-back hit the top of the bar at the other end when heading on Ruaridh Donaldson’s long throw.
The game then became very scrappy and had all the makings of a nil-nil draw until Ruddick lost his marker and headed home from a corner at close range.
Green stretched to reach a cross but could not get any power on his header before Goldberg diverted Joe Anderson’s cross into the path of Jack Jebb but his shot was deflected wide.
Goldberg was off target with a header from Montel Agyemang’s cross before Welling missed one last chance in injury time. After a goal-mouth scramble it came across to Josh Oyinsan but he headed wide from close range.
