Welling United 0-1 Corinthian-Casuals

One second half goal was sufficient to ensure that Corinthian-Casuals saw off Welling United in a hard fought F.A. Youth Cup tie at Park View Road.

An idea of how feisty the game was going to be came in just the second minute when the visitor’s Rafiq Lamptey flew in high but got away with only conceding a free kick as the referee tried to avoid using his yellow card too early.

Oliver Godziemski fired over for Welling before Adrian Ferreira-Francisco tried his luck from long range at the other end. Welling goalkeeper Archie Aldous made the easy save, probably to keep himself alert, as it appeared to be going wide.

There was little further goalmouth action until midway through the first half when the Wings conceded a needless free kick, but Detumy Nicolau’s effort flew out off the near post.

Callum Ellington shot wide for Welling after excellent work by Deandre Williams before the visitors had a good chance when Ferreira-Francisco got in behind the Welling defence and chipped over Aldous, and the bar.

Omaru King then cut in from the left wing, but his shot came back out off the legs of Aldous before the team from Surrey went even closer when Emarjay Campbell-Jones hit a low shot that came back off the inside of the post.

On the break, the Wings should have gone ahead when they had a four on two break, but a miscommunication resulted in Williams straying offside before he tucked it into the empty net.

Just before half time, a Welling defensive error let Sam Ince in, but he failed to hit the target.

After the break, Welling came out strongly and Archie Gumbrell’s low shot came out off the legs of goalkeeper Reginald Rose, but it was Corinthian-Casuals who went ahead seven minutes in.

Campbell-Jones went on a strong run and the Welling defence failed to close him down allowing him to fire into the bottom corner.

Campbell-Jones came close to levelling when his skill created space on the edge of the penalty area and Rose was called upon to make an outstanding low save. Welling then had a huge shout for a penalty when Williams appeared to have his legs taken away as he prepared to shoot.

Aldous then kept Welling in the game when saving superbly from Chukwara Uzor-Grey. Although it came out to King, the Welling defence got back to block his effort.

Errol Munde-Smith and Shicom Apena both shot wide for the visitors as Welling left space at the back looking for an equaliser but the nearest that Welling came was when Kamua Henry headed over from a cross by Kelvin Henry.

Deep into injury time, Aldous made one last save to thwart Alfawaz Dada as Welling’s campaign ended.
