Welling United 0-1 Boreham Wood
Welling United 0-1 Boreham Wood

There was further disappointment for Welling United when they fell to defeat at home to Boreham Wood.

Whilst Welling could easily have got something out of their other recent losses, they were limited to very few chances by the visitors who could have scored more themselves.

Two former Ebbsfleet United players, Femi Ilesanmi and Matt Rush, must be wondering how they didn’t get their names on the score-sheet. The former had the first opening when arriving late only to hit his close range shot wide of the near post. Then Rush had a good chance with a shot that went the wrong side of the near post and hit a steward flush on his back.

Wing back Ilesanmi had another opportunity when he leapt but got little connection on his attempted header then Rush volleyed over from Josh Hare’s cross.

Kwesi Appiah headed over when meeting a Rush centre before Welling had a great chance on the counter-attack. Josh Redfearn broke down the left and TJ Bramble hared into the middle screaming for a square pass. Sadly for Welling, Redfearn was unable to get it across where his team-mate would have been one-on-one.

Ilesamni twice came close before half time, first with a shot that went out off the base of the post then when he was denied by a brilliant save by Dylan Berry to turn his header round the post.

After the break, Welling had a rare chance when Riccardo Di Trolio lost his marker to meet Daniel Martin’s diagonal free kick but his header flew over.

Rush was then sent away by Tom Whelan and Berry had to be on his toes to turn the vicious near post shot out for a corner.

Shortly afterwards, the visitors scored. Whelan crossed to Rush and Berry made a fantastic reaction save to keep it out. Unfortunately for him, none of his back line reacted as quickly as Appiah and the Wood’s leading scorer tucked it away.

Whelan had a shot turned away superbly by Berry before Ilesamni was given another opportunity to shoot by a misplaced Welling pass and, again, Berry had to be aware to tip the drive over.

Substitute Zain Walker had a shot deflected over by a brave block by Charlie O’Connell but Welling didn’t threaten again and the visitors saw out the remaining fifteen minutes with relative ease.

Stringer’s team will be pleased for a week without an evening game to rest some tired legs ahead of next week’s difficult trip to Weston-super-Mare.
