Another home defeat left Welling United deeper in relegation trouble, eight points adrift of safety.
Sadly for them, the game followed the same pattern as their previous two games.
They were the better team for the first thirty minutes or more but failed to create clear cut chances.
That lack of penetration, combined with their inability to keep a clean sheet, meant that once again, they failed to take anything from the game.
On this occasion they were undone by a highly contentious penalty award however Aldershot missed a number of chances and were the likelier winners in the second half.
Luke Wanadio was lively early on and was at the heart of most of their best moves. After having a shot saved he created a chance for Ade Yusuff but his mis-kick went wide.
At the other end Charlie Walker shot wide before Marek Rodak did well to keep out Ross Lafayette’s chip.
Sean McGinty headed wide for Aldershot before Yusuff pulled up with a suspected hamstring injury and had to be replaced with Sahr Kabba coming on.
Ibrahim Kargbo, Noah Chesmain and Reece Harris all tried their luck for Welling before Rodak made saves from Nathan Ralph and Walker.
One last chance before the break came Welling’s way but Tome Adeloye’s header from Harris’ corner was saved by Phil Smith.
Kabba was set up by Wanadio but his effort was blocked and the wide man’s follow up shot was deflected wide for a corner.
Cheye Alexander had a shot saved by Rodak then the impressive Barney Williams got back well to thwart Walker.
Lafayette did superbly to set up Walker but his shot was saved brilliantly by Rodak.
Shots’ manager Barry Smith showed his frustration at the miss by hauling off his team’s leading scorer and bringing on Alfie Pavey.
Once again Lafayette was the creator, this time setting up Jake Gallagher, but Rodak pulled out another top draw save.
Eventually, Aldershot made the breakthrough amid much controversy. Rodak was adjudged to have fouled Lafayette and a penalty was awarded. The young Fulham loanee was unimpressed and said afterwards “It was soft. He touched me a little bit but I don’t touch him.”
Regardless of that, Lafayette picked himself up, placed the ball on the spot, and smashed home for his first Aldershot goal.
Once again, trickery on the wing allowed Wanadio to cross and Kabba’s shot flew just wide.
James Ferry and Lokko both had efforts for Welling before Rodak made one last save from Pavey.
Welling manager Dean Frost said afterwards “We probably lost our way a little bit in the second half again. Very clearly, it wasn’t a penalty in my opinion.
“We keep saying it every week, if we had the opposition’s forward like from Altrincham, to Halifax, to Braintree, we have one of their forwards in our side, it allows us to go and support and to give us bit of a physical presence. I’m trying to get one. It’s not easy because I have no money. I’m up to my eyeballs in loans.
“I think we got down the side a few times, put a few crosses in. Maybe the quality of crosses weren’t great. To get points or wins you have to score goals. Again we haven’t done that today.”
Talking about new signing Ibrahim Kargbo, he said “He’s been training with us for four or five sessions now. He’s more enthusiastic than some of the young lads. He’s sprightly. He’s quite infectious. He brings a lot of experience to the side and he’s played at a very, very good level.
“He was offered to us, He’s come along and is happy to play for a couple of games to try and put himself in the shop window, for maybe us, an experienced, steady performer that added a little bit of quality and a little bit of steel to our side.”
Now Welling have to pick themselves up ready for the North Kent derby at Bromley on Tuesday.
