Vanarama National League South safety from relegation was guaranteed for Welling United with a point at home to Weymouth.
Dan Roberts created the first opportunity for the visitors but Brandon Goodship’s control let him down and he couldn’t get a shot away. He came closer shortly after with an effort that struck Lachlan Byrd and went wide,
Harry Parsons’ deflected strike drew a good diving save out of Welling goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook then Roberts had an attempt that flew well off target.
Anthony Papadopoulos, who was playing in a more advanced role than in recent weeks, had Welling’s first opportunity when he turned Corey Panter and hit a first time lob that beat Harvey Wiles-Richards but hit the crossbar.
Charlie Rowan tried his luck with a low free kick before Harry Jones let fly from a wide angle and Charles-Cook had to be alert to push it over. Papadopoulos then delivered a deep corner that picked out Lachlan Byrd but his header back across goal was claimed by Wells-Richards. The Terras’ goalkeeper released it quickly to send Goodship away and his cross looked for Roberts, but it was behind him and his overhead kick flew well wide.
Papadopoulos then did well to create an opening and Jason Adigun played in Adam Roscrow. He attempted to shoot back across goal but it went beyond the far post. Cameron Green then created an opportunity for Adigun whose shot was too hot for Wells-Richards but his parry struck Panter and rebounded back into the arms of the Weymouth stopper.
After the interval, Welling had a succession of corners but made nothing of them and Charles-Cook was called upon into making another outstanding full length diving save to tip Roberts’ first time effort around the post. Panter then met a corner on the volley that was claimed by Charles-Cook.
Byrd then made a wonderfully timed tackle on Goodship who would have been clean through.
Adigun found himself in a good position but it wouldn’t come down for him and he could only snatch his shot well over. He was then in action at the other end with a brave block with his head from Goodship’s free kick.
Frankie Monk, a Weymouth substitute hooked over however, it was Welling who had the final goal attempt of the match. Gene Kennedy delivered a corner that Joe Ellul headed back and David Amoo’s overhead kick flew just over.
Although not at their fluent best, the point gained, combined with results elsewhere, means that Welling can enter their final game of the season, away to Slough Town, with no pressure.
