Welling United 0-0 Slough Town

Inconsistent Welling United were held by Slough Town in a game lacking in quality at Park View Road.

Coming into the game, Slough had only won one point in their previous six games, and they will have gone home happy after holding off a Welling team lacking in guile.

George Wells had the first shot of the match for the Rebels, but his effort was blocked wide before Welling won a corner that Slough struggled to clear. It fell to Sam Cox however he was unable to keep his shot down and it sailed over.

Wells earned himself a caution for a crude challenge, but Yaser Kasim’s free kick was claimed easily by goalkeeper Rhys Forster.

Ben Harris got on the end of a Guy Hollis long throw, but his header floated into the arms of Kai McKenzie-Lyle in the Welling goal.

The Wings goalkeeper was almost caught out shortly afterwards when his clearance ballooned back off Harris, but he was strong enough, and sure handed enough, to catch the rebound when under pressure.

After the interval, Welling tried to up the tempo and had the vast majority of possession but struggled to break down the Rebels defence. Stefan Payne sent Devonte Aransibia away down the left and his shot towards the far post was pushed around the post by Forster.

Kasim then sent in a diagonal cross that hit Ade Azeez and it left Forster stranded but struck the near post, and the Wings again came close when Taylor Maloney found Payne however his shot was deflected wide.

Once more Kasim was in the thick of the action when his deep cross was headed wide by Manny Parry then Maloney’s shot from twenty yards was hit straight at Forster.

Lee Togwell’s deep cross flew just over the bar, although McKenzie-Kyle appeared to have it covered before Arnold Matshazi shot over after George Hunt pulled it back.

As the game came to a close, Kasim cut in from the right but shot wide of the far post and Welling had one last chance deep into injury time when awarded a free kick twenty-five yards out. Although Payne struck it well, it was too straight, and Forster held it safely.
