Welling United completed their Bank Holiday weekend programme with a goal-less draw against Salisbury City.FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

After both clubs had won hard fought games 48 hours earlier, the unbroken August sunshine was probably the last thing the players wanted and at times the game had the feel of a pre-season friendly.

Salisbury had early opportunities but Welling dominated the second half of the first period. The complexion of the game changed however, when the visitors were reduced to ten men just before half time.

Elliott Frear shot wide for the visitors before Joe Healy was thwarted by Will Puddy in the Salisbury goal.

Theo Lewis, Dan Fitchett and Frear all had chances without testing Welling custodian Lee Butcher.FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Chris McPhee then headed a Frear corner over from close range before Welling created some openings of their own.

Loick Pires had a shot blocked by Glenn Belezika and captain Glenn Wilson’s brilliant tackle halted Jack Obersteller.

Puddy produced saves from Ross Lafayette, Kurtis Guthrie and Alex Dyer before the Whites were reduced to ten men when Lewis’ was dismissed for a poor challenge on Guthrie.

The second half was not much of a spectacle as Salisbury looked to frustrate Welling as much as possible, breaking up play whenever they could and testing referee Justin Amey’s patience with their time wasting.

Pires headed home a Doug Bergqvist cross but was well offside before Salisbury brought on substitute Warren Feeney who lasted just three minutes before being replaced by Ben Wright.

Wright missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring when heading wide following excellent work by Frear.

Lafayette had a half chance when Puddy dropped a high ball but the Wings’ striker hooked it wide of the far post.

He looked to have had a better opportunity when Guthrie’s cross was headed back by Pires but the height may have been awkward as he failed to make contact.

Once too often, Puddy delayed a restart to the game and was cautioned.

McPhee failed to hit the target with another header before Welling had one final opportunity.FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Bergqvist burst into the penalty area and was tripped by Puddy. Although a penalty kick was awarded Puddy was extremely lucky to avoid a second yellow card.

After Clovis Kamdjo had been booked for dissent, Joe Healy stepped up but put the spot kick wide.
