A midweek South East Counties Football League Premier Division derby between Welling Town and Erith Town promises to be a mouth watering affair.
Both teams have made solid starts in their first nine league games. The Boots got got off to a flyer winning their first four games but since then they have been less successful with a creditable draw at Tunbridge Wells followed by four defeats.
On Saturday they went down to a two-nil defeat at Hollands and Blair. Callum McGeehan broke the deadlock just after the hour mark and the hosts guaranteed victory with a Matt Gething last minute goal. Defeat took Welling down to eleventh place in the table as Deal Town and Glebe both won to leap-frog them.
For the Dockers it was a bye week and a rest after their first nine league games. Their last league game also ended in defeat, three-one at Beckenham Town last Tuesday. They went ahead one minute after the break through Tolu Jonah but could only hold the lead for five minutes before Harvey Brand levelled.
Tyrone Pink put the hosts ahead eleven minutes later and Tunde Aderonmu made sure of the points after a further eleven minutes. Despite not playing on Saturday Erith Town remain in eighth place.
There was no corresponding Welling Town v Erith Town league game last season due to the early curtailment of the season. However, the two teams did meet at Bayliss Avenue in the F.A. Vase when the Hoops claimed the honours with a two-nil win courtesy of goals by Tijani Eshilokun and Carl Oblitey.
Just one point separates the two teams and there are players who have represented both sides so a tight encounter could be on the cards.
