As Brad Quinton’s first pre-season as Welling United manager continues, the new first team squad is starting to take shape.
Budget restrictions and inevitable player departures meant that a complete rebuild was necessary and the Wings’ pre-season friendlies have given Quinton plenty of food for thought.
Dipo Akinyemi remains at the club as he was on a two year contract and Montel Agyemang, Anthony Cook and Nathan Green have re-signed.
Rowan Liburd, who has played international football for Saint Kitts and Nevis, and professionally for Reading, Wycombe Wanderers and Stevenage and Quba Gordon were the first newcomers to sign on the dotted line.
Further new faces to Welling supporters include Marcel Barrington, who played for Quinton at Braintree and who scored in the friendly with Crystal Palace U23s, former Yeovil Town central midfielder Tyrique Clarke, and much travelled winger, Lionel Ainsworth.
Goalkeeper Mohammed Oulad Laarbi has also joined the ranks, along with highly rated midfielder Emmanuel Maja, William Efambe (formerly of Staines Town), Lanre Azeez (ex Hastings United), German Petrov and Stefan Ilic (previously at Lewes).
Also added to the squad is Wings’ academy graduate Bradley Ryan who has signed his first senior football deal. That is an example of how the Welling manager likes to work with young players.
“What you’re getting from me, you’ll get young talent who can take that opportunity and play for me and progress and move on. That’s what I’m about” said Quinton. “There will still be some more players to come through the door and we will do some loan deals.”
