Its been all change at Welling United since the end of last season Steve King has departed and Mark Goldberg has returned to the dugout with Hugo Langton in tow as head coach. Expectations and budgets have been dimmed ever so slightly but Kent Sports News reporter Welling match reporter, Mark Doig, believes there is still reason for optimism at Park View Road.
Sum up Welling’s close and pre-season business
Welling wouldn’t be Welling without wholesale changes. The budget needed to be reduced and when Steve King left, it wasn’t surprising that some players loyal to him moved on. New players in have strong reputations, such as Rob Swaine, or great potential (Jay-Rich Baghuelou) so the squad looks in good shape.
What represents a realistic aim for Welling this season?
The league looks very strong this year but the team assembled looks good enough to challenge for the play-offs.
Star signing and why?
Adam Coombes seems to be most prolific when at Welling and I have always rated Anthony Cook and Nathan Green highly so their signings have excited me.
If there is a cause for concern what might that be?
Defensively, there has been a lot of chopping and changing in pre-season and I don’t know who will start and how long the back four will need to gel.
Your personal prediction for the season
I don’t really do predictions but I will be happy if Welling finish in the top seven.
