Wealdstone vs Welling United preview

After their F.A. Trophy defeat at Yeovil Town last weekend Welling United are back in Vanarama National League South action on Saturday with a trip to league leaders Wealdstone.

The Stones are seven points clear at the top although Havant and Waterlooville could pull that lead back to three points if they win their two games in hand.

Mark Goldberg’s team are currently in 16th place but so tight is the league that although they are only six points clear of the relegation zone they are also just six points behind the play-off places.

In recent weeks his team has been short-handed by injuries and suspensions. However, centre-backs Ejiro Okosieme and Rob Swaine got through the full ninety minutes at Yeovil and both Bradley Goldberg and Adam Coombes appear to be in much better shape now.

Sanchez Ming and Danny Waldren are both back from suspension and Gavin McCallum may be ready for a return. On the debit side, Julien Anau is still out and Goldberg will be hoping for good news from Chiori Johnson who went off injured late on at Yeovil.

Korrey Henry has now signed for Welling from Bromley and played in the Trophy game last week and also signed for competition up front is Dipo Akinyemi who has been playing for Braintree Town.

It will be another tough task for the Wings as they head into the busy Christmas period. Wealdstone have won eight of their nine games at home this season with only Havant winning there in the league although Royston Town shocked them with a three-two win in the F.A. Trophy.

When the two teams met at Park View Road earlier in the season, the Stones claimed all three points in something of a smash and grab raid. Until Michael Phillips scored in the sixty-eighth minute, Welling looked the more likely winners. Ten minutes later they went two up through Dennon Lewis. Coombes pulled one back from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining but it was too little too late.
