Watt focusing on the league
Watt focusing on the league

Following their midweek win against Whitehawk that took Hythe Town into the last thirty-two of the Isuzu FA Trophy for the very first time, Cannons boss Steve Watt has called on his side to now forget about their record-breaking run and focus on the bread and butter of Isthmian South East points this weekend as Chichester City visits Reachfields on Saturday.

Watt was naturally delighted with his side in midweek as he told KSN, “the performance I think was better than a 3-2 win. We could – and should – have been well out of sight well before they scored their first goal. I think so was definitely one of the more comfortable 3-2 wins you could have to be fair. We created lots of opportunities and on another night, we could have had four or five – the boys were just outstanding simple as that; from start to finish they we terrific and we were deservedly though in the end. The pitch was very heavy though I thought both sides coped very well – it was obviously difficult but credit the game was even on when you saw how many were not on Tuesday. We are in a position now where we just want to try and get games played at the moment and luckily enough it passed its pitch inspection. It was never going to be the prettiest of spectacles, but it was one of those games to roll your sleeves up and get stuck in and get over the line and get over the line,” Watt said adding, “I would have loved to played in those conditions – I think I would be been in my element!”

“We now get a tie in January against Chorley (from the National League North) where neither side will really know too much about the opposition. We will do our homework for that game in time, but before then we have got some big games coming up in the League first, but as of now we are fully focused on the League with a big came again on Saturday with a really busy schedule ahead of us in the next couple of months.”

City return to Kent just days after a Wednesday night 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Ramsgate on Wednesday which extended their poor run to just one defeat in their last eight games, but Watt well remembers the 5-0 beating his side received in Sussex back in September and will not be taking the visitors lightly. “I think they’re one of the best teams in the League,” he told us. “They are definitely the best football team in the division – I have said that for many years. They are a really good side who have got better and better every year, and they are no different this year!”

“I know they are going through a little run at the minute, but they are a very, very good outfit and it will be a very tough game. We got a good hiding down there on an off day, but they fully deserved to win on the day, so we will be looking to put that right on Saturday. We are at home, and we always fancy our chances at Reachfields…”
