Gillingham are expected to make changes for their EFL Cup Second Round tie against Watford at Vicarage Road on Tuesday night.

On the back of Saturday’s 5-0 thrashing at Scunthorpe United in League One, manager Justin Edinburgh is expected to ring the changes for the cup game against Premier League opposition.

The likes of Cody McDonald, Bradley Dack and Jake Hessenthaler will all be in contention for starting places as Edinburgh looks to field a side capable of keeping pace with the top flight side.

Having shipped so many goals on the weekend, Edinburgh may look to change things at the back with goalkeeper Stuart Nelson finding there will be pressure from Tom Hadler after shipping some soft goals in recent weeks.

Nelson has the backing of Edinburgh, but the Gills boss admits his number one hasn’t been on top form this season:

“For many a game last year Stuart was outstanding for us. Stuart hasn’t done that (make mistakes) in his career, that’s not what he’s about.”

“This is why he is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in this league and why a lot of clubs were chasing him in the summer.”

Fans are still expected to travel in their numbers for the rebranded cup having won 3-1 at Southend United in the First Round.

Meanwhile, Younes Kaboul could make his Watford debut against following his switch from Sunderland.

However, fellow new Watford signing Roberto Pereyra is awaiting a work permit having completed his move from Serie A champions Juventus.

Summer arrival Isaac Success could be involved if he can shake off a hamstring problem, but Ben Watson is still suspended.

The last meeting between these sides was their only previous meeting in this competition – Watford won 3-0 in a first round tie in August 2007.

Gillingham’s last win at Vicarage Road in all competitions came in a second tier league meeting in March 2003 (1-0), losing two and drawing one since then.

The Hornets have reached the third round of the League Cup in just one of the previous seven seasons (2013-14).

Meanwhile, Gillingham have not progressed past the second round since 2005-06, beating Portsmouth 3-2 at Priestfield – which was also the last time they beat Premier League opposition in the competition.
