Wednesday’s press conference to officially unveil Guy Luzon as Charlton’s new head coach was, to put it mildly, less than impressive.
CEO, Katrien Meire, said that within an hour of the public announcement of Bob Peeters’ sacking on Sunday evening, she had received 20 applications for the post. She added that by late evening on Monday, Luzon was the clear favourite.
On Monday evening Meire issued a statement saying that the club would be launching an extensive search to find the right man to replace Peeters.
By Tuesday afternoon, news of Luzon’s appointment was made public, surely one of the shortest ‘extensive searches’ on record!
It was a poorly handled scenario, Luzon was a 1/4 shot with the bookies as soon as news of Peeters’ departure broke.
Nigel Atkins and Brian McDermott had excellent credentials for a side looking to climb out of the Championship.
The episode has deflated fans and the Valley faithful are badly in need of a lift, starting at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
The players are also said to be less than enamoured with the appointment, and the new head coach will need to demonstrate his abilities.
Luzon hinted that there could be new arrivals next week and given that he likes to play a more direct style, a traditional English target man, or possibly even two, could be the first newcomers through the doors.
Watford currently occupy the last play-off spot but have not been in sparkling form at Vicarage Road of recent times.
The Hornets have lost three of their last four home fixtures, with their only win coming against lowly Wigan.
Luzon is thought to have had problems with some of the current Charlton squad during his Standard Liege days. Tal Ben Haim, Yoni Buyens, Frederic Bulot, George Tucudean and possibly Tony Watt may have reservations about their new boss.
Things will undoubtedly be different but wholesale changes in his first game are unlikely, and the new head coach will be relying on Damien Matthew and Ben Roberts for help. Luzon’s first side may look something like this:
Etheridge; Solly, Ben Haim, Bikey, Wiggins; Gudmundsson, Jackson, Cousins, Harriott; Watt, Vetokele.
Subs: Dmitrovic, Fox, Onyewu, Wilson, Buyens, Tucudean, Church.
The referee is Darren Bond from Lancahire. Bond took charge of the Ipswich game at The Valley when the Addicks lost their unbeaten start to the season.
After a week of such upheaval and uncertainty, any sort of a result will be seen as a bonus.
