Watford 1-1 Charlton Athletic

A feisty game with one Charlton player possibly lucky to avoid a red card, and another forced out of the action early.Watford

The eagle-eyed may have noticed that the centre and penalty spots were marked by crosses, rather than the usual circles. Quite legitimate in case you are wondering.

Chris Solly was still sidelined with his knee niggle and Leon Cort was also missing through a knee problem. Dorian Dervite moved to the centre and fit again Richard Wood took Dervite’s place on the left. Ben Alnwick and Cameron Stewart replaced Nick Pope and Callum Harriott on the bench.

Chris Powell again utilised a 3-5-2 formation to match the system used by Watford. The Addicks started brightly and had the ball in the net midway through the half when Wood bundled the ball over the line but his effort was disallowed.

Charlton had a promising situation after 33 minutes. A Johnnie Jackson free-kick cannoned off the wall and went out for a corner. Davide Faraoni and Church tangled and were both shown the yellow card by Andy Woolmer, though it appeared that Church may have thrown a punch.

The visitors took the lead two minutes after the restart. A neat move down the right involving perpetual motion man, Bradley Pritchard, and Lawrie Wilson ended with Wilson being scythed down in the area by Essaid Belkalem. Yann Kermorgant slammed the ball into the top right hand corner of Manuel Almunia’s net.

Gianfranco Zola made a change on the hour mark when he introduced Ikechi Anya in place of Faraoni. The winger went on to have a fine game.

Kermorgant took a knock to his ankle and though he struggled on for a few minutes, he signalled to the bench that he could not carry on. He was replaced by Joe Pigott midway through the half.

Watford drew level with 19 minutes remaining. The Addicks were forced to concede a corner and though Ben Hamer parried Diego Fabbrini’s shot, Daniel Pudil was on hand to prod the ball over the line.

Both sides had opportunities to win the game, with Johnnie Jackson having the pick of Charlton’s chances, but the skipper mis-kicked a left-wing cross from close in.

Powell will be delighted with the point but it may have come at a cost. Kermorgant’s ankle injury may keep him out for a game or two.
