They may be behind table toppers Sevenoaks Town, but Ashford United are the only Kent side in Bet Victor South East still boasting a one hundred percent record.
Yet boss Tommy Warrilow was a frustrated manager when KSN caught up with him this week…
Warrilow explained his frustration when he told us, “It’s been very stop start especially after the unfortunate incident at Whyteleafe and then we lost the Ramsgate game in midweek because of their Trophy replay so we really need to get some consistency game-wise as that will help with the teams performances at the moment, we have one game and then we get a three week break to another game – it’s like three Saturdays!”
“It is what it is and we’re going to get games coming thick and fast now especially the way the Velocity Trophy’s been done this year with more games in that and all we pray is that we don’t get any injuries in that like all clubs.”
“We’re really pleased at the start especially as we’re demanding more and more of the players all the time. We’re winning games, but we’re having a dig that perhaps we should be winning the games by more, but we’ve had such a stop start that we’re trying to be fair to the lads.”
“You can’t ask much more than to win your first five games – we’re not going to let complacency set in; we know that there’s a lot more to do and that’s what we’ll be aiming to do!”
This weekend, it’s the turn of Kevin Watson and his Cray Valley (PM) side to arrive at Homelands to try and take League points home with them.
Warrilow meanwhile knows his side are in for a tough afternoon. “They’ve come in and started very well,” he said.
“They’ve invested heavily as well and they’ve got some good players and again, with respect to Cray Valley or whoever is bottom of the League, there’s not an easy game in this League. It’s still too early in the season to look into who’s going to be a hard game and who’s going to be an easy game, I just treat every game as a really difficult game.”
In the opposition goal on Saturday should be Andy Walker – a keeper Warrilow knows well, “And I’m pleased to see him too,” the Ashford boss admitted, “as we thought he had a career threatening injury for us when we were at Thamesmead (in a game away at Great Wakering Rovers) and for him to come through a horrible injury and still be playing and it shows what a character he is.”
“I’ve known Walks for a long, long time and I’m really pleased for him that he’s back enjoying his football playing in goal and I’m sure he’ll be a difficult force to get past on Saturday.”
Another member of Warrilow’s “team” at Thamesmead, is the Cray Valley goalkeeper coach Craig Gibson who will be missing at Homelands as he’s recovering from a recent heart scare.
Warrilow told us that he’d been keeping in touch with his former coach, saying, “I’ve been texting him and it’s a bit surreal for him he’s saying which I understand as he was always running before the games and knowing that he looks after himself.”
“To then hear the news that he had a heart attack was shocking but thankfully he’s on the way to recovery – he’s a really top bloke and the nicest feller you’d ever wish to meet, and I’m just glad he’s on the road to recovery!” – a comment that we’re sure everyone in Kent Football would like to echo.
“We’re still looking for players and we’ve hopefully had someone coming to training this week and we signed Aaron Condon the other week – we’re always looking and the phone always rings; players have gone where things haven’t worked out but we’re always on the look-out and I’ve told the boys that as it keeps every body happy!”
“But I’m more than happy with what I’ve got – we’re unbeaten so far for goodness sake – the lads can’t do any more than what they’re doing. I’m just demanding more from them every week and obviously keeping them on their toes. I’ve got a great changing room; we’re confident not arrogant going into games as we know that there’s still a long way to go in the season.”
“We’ve no problems going into the weekend. Jay May should be fit now after a few tight hamstrings but that’s another result of not playing every week and just going into training. Everyone’s fit and raring to go…”
