Warrilow happy to make Homelands return

New Ashford United boss Tommy Warrilow told KSN this week all about returning to Homelands almost a quarter of a century after playing for the club under Neil Cugley.

A win at Phoenix in his first game was followed by a home draw with Whyteleafe a week ago and this weekend sees the new management team head for their third game in charge at Southwood, to face a Ramsgate side who themselves will have Nick Davis in charge for the first time.

Warrilow told us, “Obviously pleased with the two results as they’re two teams up there with us and for us it’s finding our feet with the players and looking at players out there who can come in and strengthen the squad.”

When asked about his return to the home dressing room at Homelands, the response was “it’s not changed at all,” the new Ashford boss joked!  “

I know what the club is capable of and what it’s got down there. But I’m sure that other managers who have come in before me have also had the same aim of bringing more people in.”

“You only do that by winning games and that’s our aim over the next few seasons as well as getting the club back up the pyramid where I believe that they belong.”

“The fans will come out as there are more and more houses going up all the time, and the only way to tap into that market is to keep winning.”

“If I’m honest there wasn’t much of a different welcome as you’ve got to remember that it’s a long time since I played at Ashford – it has to be nearly 25 years and whilst there were some old faces, the vast majority have only ever known me as a visiting manager who once played for the club!”

“It doesn’t give me a shoe in that I played for the club – I’ve now got to go down there and get results as the club’s manager or leave no stone unturned trying.”

When asked about facing Ramsgate with their new boss in charge for the first time, Warrilow said, “We had it with Phoenix!  But whether the manager is new or not and the side is at the top, middle or bottom of the table, we’ll treat everyone with the same respect whoever they are.”

“We’ll go to Ramsgate and their players will be looking to impress Nick, but you’ve got to remember that it’s only our third game and our players are still trying to impress us.”

Warrilow was then asked about player movements.  “We’ve brought in John Coker who I had at Thamesmead earlier in the season,” he said.

“We’ve also brought in Liam Gillies a young midfielder from Dartford but it’s down to us to make sure that when we do sign a player it’s to strengthen your side who is better than what we’ve got, but at the moment, we did say that we’ll give all the boys a chance, but we do need to bring a couple of more bodies in to make the squad stronger as it is still a relatively small squad.  We’re still getting to know the players as I want to get the competition going at bit…”
