Walsall v Gillingham preview

Gillingham head to Walsall this weekend looking to extend their unbeaten start to the League One season.

Despite Tuesday night’s exit to Millwall in the Carabao Cup, Steve Lovell’s side will head to the Midlands full of confidence.

Wins against Accrington Stanley and Burton Albion see The Gills near the top of the fledgling league table, with six points from six.

This weekend they will look to pick up another three points and boss Steve Lovell is hoping for a repeat of last season where they won 1-0, but will be without a few key players:

“It was nice last season. We got the result, it was a great feeling but they have started well and are full of confidence.”

“They will be well organised and dangerous from set plays so we need to be aware of that.”

“It’s mainly about what we do. You need to be consistent but we take things on a game by game basis.”

“Tom Eaves is back in contention. Elliott (List) and Josh (Rees) will be another 4-5 days. Dean (Parrett) won’t be involved, he will be another week.”

“It’s not 11 players. We have depth throughout which is healthy.”

Despite being plagued by injuries last season, midfielder Billy Bingham is enjoying playing football again and the fact there is now competition for places at The Gills:

“Competition keeps you on your toes. It’s good for everyone.”

“You have to stay on your toes. You can’t take anything for granted. I think I have got over the mental block and I’m just looking to enjoy myself.”

Steve Lovell is expected to field his strongest side this weekend and that should see Tom Eaves start, whilst Gabriel Zakuani should come back into the team after missing Tuesday night’s clash at Millwall.
