Walsall v Charlton Athletic preview

After winning four games on the bounce, Charlton have now gone three games without a win.

Karl Robinson’s side must now try to end that sequence in two tough looking away games this week.

The manager will welcome Ricky Holmes back to the squad, but looks certain to be without Jason Pearce, and possibly Billy Clarke as well.

Pearce is an organiser and a leader, and Patrick Bauer is a better player when Pearce is alongside him.

Robinson will have to choose between Ezri Konsa and Naby Sarr if Pearce is ruled out. Sarr would be the like-for-like replacement, as he is a left-footer.

Konsa is a more cultured player and has been used in midfield from the bench by Robinson. The manager may prefer to keep Konsa’s versatility as an option to bring on later in the game.

Clarke suffered a back spasm towards the end of the Bury game, and may not be risked on Tuesday.

Clarke has been a big influence since his arrival, but Robinson will have Holmes available again.

Karlan Ahearne-Grant did not have the best of games against Bury, but could be given another chance.

Ben Reeves – though not yet ready to go into the starting XI – could be on the bench.

The Addicks could line-up something like this:

Amos; Solly, Bauer, Sarr, DaSilva; Kashi, Forster-Caskey, Fosu, Ahearne-Grant, Holmes; Magennis.

Subs: Phillips, Jackson, Konsa, Aribo, Reeves, Dodoo, Hackett-Fairchild.

The referee will be Carl Boyeson from East Yorkshire.

Robinson will be looking for at least four points from this game and Saturday’s fixture at Fleetwood.

He would be delighted if his team could win at the Banks’s.
