Walker still gets that buzz
Walker still gets that buzz

Legend is a word that is often over used in sport but it is the right word to describe veteran rider Chris Walker.

Stalker has moved to the BeWiser Kawasaki managed by Kent’s Tommy Hill for the 2015 MCE British Superbike Championship.

The 42-year old is the oldest man on the superbike grid now but he hasn’t lost any of the buzz for racing.

Speaking exclusively to Kent Sports News, he said: “Over the years the buzz changes for different reasons, when you are first starting out everything is new so it is exciting for that reason.

“As time progresses it gets more exciting because you get more competitive and then maybe a contender and now in the latter part of my career it is exciting to be involved in especially something like this as a new team. Everything is brand new so you are involved in the development of the bike and the team becoming a team together.

“The racing never changes I love racing full stop so there is excitement all-round and I can’t wait to get going now.”

Chris will now have Tommy Hill as team manager a former which as he admits is a bold step for the 2011 BSB champion.

He added: “I think it is a bold step and it’s fantastic for the championship, it is not a championship that is struggling for riders on the grid as you know. I think there is 39 and they are one shy of the magic forty at the moment. To have an ex British champion as a team manager with a proper team there not playing at.

“Alan Greig who owns the team has recognised the benefits of having Tommy involved, for me it gave the team that added credibility. So when they were talking to me last year with regards to thinking about being part of it for 2015.

“When Tommy’s name was mentioned it went from being a bit enthused about it to being really excited about it. The little bit that we have had to do with each other the winter so far which has been more on the design side of the bike and what we need to do as a team to get everything looking right.

“Tommy has been amazing and his enthusiasm, as I have touched on my enthusiasm there, his with this being a new venture is off the scale, and he wants everything to look right. He wants everything to look right, he has got a design background with his own business. As you have seen the bike today, a lot of people it really is beautiful really. It is testament to Tommy’s ability behind the scenes as a designer to get everything together and looking right.

“What he is doing here today, brining everybody together so that team sponsors can meet other team sponsors and hopefully maybe do business together, because of it, it is a knock on effect for the sponsors which ultimately benefits the team. The team has a lot of support and I think it will have a lot of fans support.

“Danny my teammate is one of the fastest, most talented up and coming riders that we have had in the long time in the UK. He is one of the few that has stayed and raced on British shores, we have got other great riders but they are overseas racing. Gino Rea and the likes have gone straight overseas, we didn’t even see Bradley Smith coming through the ranks and he is podium potential for MotoGp.

“Danny has stayed in the British Championship and that’s great, for me to have a young hungry teammate keeps me on my toes. For him to have an older teammate with experience will hopefully for him as well from a set-up point of view and things like that and how quickly we can develop the motorbikes.

“With Tommy in the corner giving us pointers and showing us what to do, he has done it right before and he has done it wrong before. It should be a great package and I am hoping we will be a surprise. It is going to be tough we are coming from nowhere and the team didn’t exist three months ago, and the bikes didn’t exist a week ago and we are off to Spain next week.

“We are coming from zero and we have a testing programme plan which is extensive, we have three days at one track in Spain, then a couple of days rest move onto another track for another two days. For me that will be important really as I haven’t ridden a bike since last October last year, but it was a Kawasaki ZX10 similar to this one. A few choice differences, suspension and engine tuning and electronics and stuff, but ultimately it’s the same DNA. I will use the first test to get my mind back and get up to speed and put the bike through its paces.

“The team will use that first test to gel as a team because obviously there is new mechanics working with new crew chiefs, with new riders so all that comes together. Everyone finds their strengths and you fit into your little niche within the team. Then we have the next test which we can really get our heads down and start to get up to speed, then we have a couple more tests when we get back to the UK.

“They have done a lot behind the scenes to make sure that we are in the best position that we can be going into round one. It will be tough there are a lot of teams out there and a lot of good riders, I think the bikes are going to be capable and fingers crossed we do a great job.”
