Scott Wagstaff was perhaps unlucky not to be offered a new deal at The Valley. Hailed as having ‘two hearts’ by Chris Powell when he scored the opening goal of the Powell managerial regime.
A lung busting performance was rewarded with a goal ten minutes after the break against Plymouth, to send Powell and the home fans into raptures.
Wagstaff never gave anything less than 100% but was never quite able to nail down a spot on a regular basis.
The Maidstone born 23-year-old made his debut in the game at Barnsley in April 2008 that also saw Jonjo Shelvey make his senior Addicks bow. While Shelvey put in a man of the match performance, it took Wagstaff longer to settle.
Possibly blooded before he was ready by Alan Pardew, Wagstaff was eased back into the first team during Phil Parkinson’s managerial tenure.
Wagstaff made his final Charlton appearance as a substitute against Bristol City at The Valley, in the last game of the season. Ironically, it seems that he will plying his trade at Ashton Gate in the forthcoming campaign. Wagstaff will have a medical in Bristol on Monday. Bristol City are the team that Ben Hamer supported as a boy.
In total, the midfielder made 87 starts plus 54 substitute appearances for the Addicks, scoring 22 goals. Everyone connected with Charlton will wish the popular Scott the very best of luck in the next phase of his career.
