Wagstaff joins Orient on loan

Scott Wagstaff has joined Leyton Orient on an initial 28 day loan. Wagstaff has recently returned from injury and has been on the bench for the last three games.

His only start this season was ironically, in the Capital One Cup game against Orient when he scored Charlton’s goal.

Wagstaff was in hot water with Chris Powell earlier in the season, when a photo of him wearing a Tranmere shirt on holiday was revealed. When Danny Green had to be withdrawn due to injury after 20 minutes at Blackpool last week, eyes were raised when Bradley Pritchard, rather than Wagstaff, came on as a replacement.

This is what Powell said about the move:

“Scott has been on the fringes so far this season, so instead of him just being in the squad and on the bench and not getting much game time, this is an opportunity for him to get some minutes under his belt.

“He loves playing and deserves to play football every weekend. We will benefit from him playing regularly and getting some much-needed football, and then, at the end of the 28 days, we can assess things further.”

As it is a 28 day loan the Addicks will not be able to recall Wagstaff, so it has to be assumed that Danny Green’s injury is not serious. Powell’s statement appears to leave the door open for the deal to be extended.

There was much debate amongst Charlton fans last season as to whether Wagstsff should should start on the right-hand side of midfield ahead of Green. However, the academy product seems to have slipped down the pecking order this season.

Wagstaff is now 22-years-old and has made 80 starts plus 52 appearances as a sub in all competitions for the Addicks, netting 21 goals.

It remains to be seen whether the move is just to get Wagstaff some game time or if his time at The Valley is drawing to a close.
