VCD Athletic vs Fisher – Preview

On Monday, the Southern Counties East Football League play-off match between VCD Athletic and Fisher will decide which club joins Faversham in the Isthmian League South East division.

Ross Baker and Danny Joy’s Vickers have home advantage by rights of finishing as runners up with only the champions winning automatic promotion. They then beat Punjab United in their eliminator. Fisher finished fourth and had to travel to third placed Whitstable Town to qualify for the decider.

Connor Dymond was involved in nearly all of the talking points in VCD’s victory over Punjab. He scored a brilliant goal in the tenth minute before crossing for Michael Fenn to head home just after the half hour mark. He then made a brave challenge on Roman Campbell which left the Vickers warrior having to be patched up before his bandaged head looked to have knocked it over his own goal-line, but the assistant referee decided otherwise. VCD ended with a two-nil victory, which they deserved.

Meanwhile, Fisher had to go through the emotions of a penalty shoot-out at Whitstable Town. The Oystermen were playing their seventh match in fourteen days and, after a tight first half, went ahead through Jake McIntyre. They then missed chances to make it two, and Fisher defended well before levelling in the final minute through Kesna Clarke. It then went to penalties and Isaac Ogunseri made the crucial save as Fisher prevailed four-three.

In the two league games between VCD and Fisher, the Vickers won four points. Back in September, they scored six minutes into the game, and then again six minutes before the end. Their goalscorers were Bethel Gboda and Ollie Freeman. Then, in Rotherhithe in March, the spoils were shared. Armani-Jordan Martin put the Fish ahead in the fifth minute and it appeared that the goal would be sufficient until Ben Fitchett levelled with three minutes remaining.

Although the Vickers will start as favourites, due to having finished fourteen points ahead of their visitors, play-offs are one-off games and there will be no lack of tension.
