This evening, VCD Athletic entertain Glebe in a Southern Counties East Football League derby.
Twelfth placed VCD have had a mixed start since being relegated in a one off play-off at the end of last season. However, they will take heart from the fact that their local rivals, Phoenix Sports, had an equally indifferent start to their campaign last season but a strong second half saw them promoted.
They have won two, drawn one and lost three so far. On Saturday, they were defeated four-two at Hollands and Blair. Dean Grant scored for the hosts on the half hour mark, but the Vickers levelled through Lekan Osideko one minute later. Alfie Giles restored Blair’s lead before half time and Grant scored twice more to complete his hat-trick in the second half. Harry Sargent pulled one back with three minutes remaining, but it was too little too late.
Meanwhile, Glebe won a tight game, one-nil, against Lordswood with hitman Jamie Philpot scoring the only goal seven minutes after the break. That allowed them to take top spot from Fisher, one point ahead of Corinthian, Fisher and Erith Town.
Four wins and two draws mean that only they and Bearsted are unbeaten at this early stage of the season.
Philpot with five goals, Ali Fofanah, four, and Malachi Morris, three, have all been on scoring form for the Foxes. Osideko and Jeff Duah-Kessie have scored three each for VCD so there could be hard work ahead for the two defensive lines.
