With just four more Saturday’s left of the 2017-18 Bostik South season, Cray Wanderers make their final visit of the season into Kent to take on VCD Athletic for the first time in a league game since 2004.
Kick off at the Oakwood is 3pm.
The last two games have seen unbearable drama with Cray scoring late goals at Chipstead last Saturday and then at home to Greenwich Borough on Monday to maintain a five game unbeaten league run.
Despite a difficult first half against Greenwich Borough at times, Cray after going behind early in the second half fought back well and fully merited the point gained from Michael Power’s penalty in the eighth minute of stoppage time for Tony Russell’s side.
The Wands have four games left and remain fourth on 82 points, a point behind Greenwich Borough and five behind second placed Carshalton who have two games in hand. Cray are also two goals shy of a 100 league goals for the season which hasn’t happened since the 1974-75 Metropolitan League Championship team.
The race for the Golden Boot in the Bostik South saw Jack Barham of Greenwich Borough score twice to take him to 32 goals but Charlie MacDonald is joint second along with Josh Kelly of Walton Casuals and Billy Medlock on 21 goals. Michael Power is on 19 with a cluster of strikers and he too needs just two more goals for a 100 career Wands goals.
VCD Athletic moved across from the Bostik North in the summer and currently lie 16th on 47 points. Keith McMahon’s side come into the game on the back of an impressive 3-0 win at near neighbours Phoenix Sports on Easter Monday. Two early goals from Alfie Cue set them on the way with Jeffrey Gyafi scoring in the second half. This ended a three game losing run but before that in February – early March they went six games unbeaten.
The two sides met as recently as 10th January with Cray winning 4-2 at Hayes Lane with all the goals coming in the second half. Karl Dent gave Cray the lead before VCD levelled through Siao Blackwood and took the lead with a Warren Mfula penalty. Cray though as so often this season didn’t know the meaning of the word defeat and levelled through Charlie MacDonald on his Wands debut and then a thunderous strike from Ben Mundele put Cray back in front. MacDonald scored again before the end to cap a great evening at the Lane.
VCD’s home results this season have seen wins against Thamesmead Town (3-1), Walton Casuals (3-2), Molesey (4-0), Ramsgate (3-1), Shoreham (1-0), Sittingbourne (3-1) and East Grinstead Town (2-1). They drew with Whyteleafe (3-3), Hastings United (1-1) and Guernsey (2-2) and lost at home to Faversham Town (0-5), Hythe Town (1-2), Chipstead (1-3), Lewes (1-2), Greenwich Borough (0-1), South Park (1-2), Phoenix Sports (0-1), Carshalton Athletic (1-4), Corinthian Casuals (0-1) and Herne Bay (2-3). Away from home VCD won at Ashford United (5-2), East Grinstead Town (3-0), Ramsgate (1-0), Corinthian Casuals (1-0), Greenwich Borough (3-1), Shoreham (1-0) and Phoenix Sports 3-0). They picked up a point at Thamesmead Town and their other games all ended in defeats at Whyteleafe, Herne Bay, Sittingbourne, Faversham Town, Hastings United, Hythe Town, Guernsey, Walton Casuals, Horsham, Cray Wanderers, Chipstead and Lewes. Kemo Darboe is the leading scorer with 11 goals.
With so much to play for the last four games are going to be very exciting and dramatic and with twists and turns aplenty that is for sure.
