Clinical finishing was the difference between the two sides as VCD Athletic completed the league double over Ramsgate.
Most of the early play went the way of the visitors and they won a string of corners. They had the first clear chance when Tijan Jadama sent Alfie Paxman away but Joe Mant was out quickly to block.
Paxman then had a good chance with a free kick but swung it straight in at Mant, waist high, and the keeper held well.
Probably against the run of play, VCD went ahead after twenty two minutes. A strong challenge in midfield left Daniel Lawrence in a heap and the Vickers broke away. Ellis Brown drew Luke Watkins out before squaring for Alastair Gordon to slot home despite the best efforts of a defender on the line.
Tony Martin fired a long shot wide before Ramsgate had another good chance. Tom Chapman tried to round Mant but over-ran it and the goalkeeper was able to clear.
That proved costly for the Rams as VCD showed their cutting edge with an excellent second goal. Omar Lawson crossed and Martin twisted in the area to send a towering header into the top corner.
Chapman fired over before the break as Ramsgate looked for a late response.
Manager Lloyd Blackman made a change at the break bringing on Billy Munday for Adam Woollcott in an effort to change their luck and they again started on the front foot.
Once again, Paxman troubled the Vickers defence but Chapman was unable to apply the finish. Then Rory Smith fired wide after being played in by Jake Mackenzie.
Another Paxman cross found Chapman unmarked but he headed meekly at Mant when he should have done better. Next Smith slanted in a cross field pass that found Paxman but he fired over.
It was not all one way though and Gordon drew a full length save out of Luke Watkins at the expense of a corner.
As the game became more stretched, Smith let fly and Mant tipped it out for a corner via the post. Then at the other end Lawson’s wild shot went well wide after Ricardo Joseph had created space for him.
Keith McMahon made a double change for the Vickers and it had an immediate effect. Ramsgate struggled to clear and substitute Rashid Kamara laid it off for Martin to slam home from the edge of the box.
Not only did the change create the chance but McMahon also pushed Kojo Awotwi back to right back and his speed enabled him to keep Paxman quiet for the first time all evening.
Well into injury time, Ramsgate scored a deserved consolation goal when Mant failed to hold a shot and Smith bundled home but it was too little too late and victory moved VCD up to 14th place.
