Jason Euell’s Under-23 side drew 0-0 with Watford at Greenwich Borough’s ground on Monday afternoon.
The match marked the last game that academy goalkeeping coach, Lee Smelt, will be involved in. Smelt – now 60 – has retired from coaching.
He has been involved in coaching keepers from the time they entered the academy as Under-9s, right the way through to Under-23 level.
Edmonton born Smelt’s league career saw him play 175 games for. Nottingham Forest, Peterborough, Halifax, Cardiff and Exeter.
Popular amongst players and parents alike, Smelt will be much missed.
Happy retirement Lee.
Watford fielded a team of teenagers, who coped well with Charlton’s more experienced line-up.
Indeed it was the Hornets who finished the stronger. The introduction of 16-year-old Imaad Sankoh for the last quarter of the game gave the visitors a real boost.
