Tyre issues keep Camier off podium

Leon Camier admits his chances to securing a top five finish in the overall World Superbike Championship standings are probably over.

The Ashford rider admitted this after finishing behind Leon Haslam at Magny-Cours.

Though the Aprilia Alitalia rider enjoyed one of better points’ hauls of the season with a run to fourth and sixth, he finished behind Haslam on each occasion meaning a margin of 22 points splits them with one round and two races to go.

Struggling to make the tyres work on his RSV-4, Camier is now hoping to consolidate his sixth place in the standings with good results in the Portimao season finale.

“We knew we had taken a gamble with our choice of tyre in the second race, but we needed more grip in order to keep up with the best and try for a podium.

“I tried to manage the wear as best as possible to get to the last laps with something left, but it just wasn’t enough: in the end I didn’t have any more grip and I had no choice but to give up positions.

“It’s a shame because it was really important to stay ahead of Haslam from a championship point of view. We’ll try to end this season well at Portimao.”
