Gillingham welcome managerless Forest Green Rovers this weekend looking for their fourth League win in a row since Boxing Day and for keeper Jake Turner, a chance for an eleventh clean sheet of the season.
Speaking to KSN this week, he said, “Getting three points is the main thing – keeping clean sheets obviously makes me happy, but it is the points that are the main thing at the end of the day.”
“Keeping clean sheets is something that we practice as a whole team and in the last few games, I haven’t had to make many saves to be fair as the defence has been excellent from the attackers all the way back and hopefully when I am called upon, I can help the team out!”
“We have changed shape going to a back three – or five whichever way you want to look at it – and there are some who see it more defensively, but we see it as more attacking with wing backs.”
“We look solid and I do not think we look like conceding too many goals which obviously is good news.”
Turner has kept ten clean sheets this season in League Two which is a joint high in the division and something that the keeper is naturally pleased with.
“On a personal level, that’s good!” he confessed. “But it is a whole collective for the defenders, the midfielders and the strikers – we all dig in to try and keep a clean sheet and then scoring goals as well is part of the game to win.”
Reflecting on last weekend’s win at Accrington, the Gills keeper admitted, “We haven’t come from behind enough in games this season, to win games especially, so to show the character we did last week after the disappointment of the Sheffield United Cup tie and going one-nil down in the game itself was massive for us and shows how together the team is – really was a massive win!”
“We’re one place off the Play Offs at the moment so we are doing reasonably well, but obviously you can always strengthen squads and bring players in, so it’s down to the powers that be to act, and we’ll just try to do our best on the pitch!”
“The ultimate goal has to be in and around the Play Offs, if not the top three, so we’ve got to keep working hard and take each game as it comes and see where it takes us.”
“The ground staff have been working hard to get the game on at the weekend – the pitch has been covered and hopefully it looks like it’s going to brighten up a little bit over the weekend, so hopefully the game will be on!”
