Tunbridge Wells vs Sutton Athletic – Preview

Two teams aiming for a strong finish meet when Tunbridge Wells host Sutton Athletic in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division on Wednesday evening.

For the hosts, it will be their fifth consecutive home match in eight day spell as they make up for their backlog of matches. They have yielded one win, a draw, and two defeats thus far during the run. Their most recent match was on Easter Monday when they entertained Rusthall in a local derby in front of a crowd of over eleven hundred.

Needing a win to hold on to their place in the play-offs, The Rustics went ahead in the ninth minute of the second half when Yassin Fares converted from the spot. However, two minutes later, Tom Jones levelled for the hosts, and there was no further scoring. That proved to be costly for Rusthall as Punjab United leap-frogged them into the final play-off spot courtesy of their victory at Stansfeld.

While the Wells were damaging the hopes of one team, Sutton were not able to stop VCD Athletic from guaranteeing the runners-up spot, and home advantage in the play-offs. The visitors looked as if they were going to escape from Crayford with a point despite having been reduced to ten men midway through the first half when Ben White was sent off. However, in stoppage time, the Vickers were awarded a penalty and Adebola Sotoyinbo converted from the spot.

When Tunbridge Wells visited Sutton back in October, the hosts claimed the spoils with two very late goals. Ellis Ahmed put them ahead one minute from time and Taylor Fisher made sure of the win in the third minute of stoppage time.

Although both teams are destined for a mid-table finish, they will still be keen to go into the final game of the season off the back of a win.
