It’s been a busy Tuesday night for our Non League sides – here’s the round up and we begin in the Vanarama National League with mixed news again for Kent’s four sides.
Maidstone United take pride of place with a 1-0 win at Aldershot courtesy of Blair Turgott’s 25th minute strike. The win lifts the Stones out of the bottom four.
And there was some cheer for Dover Athletic who are off the bottom of the table as the came back from 0-2 at Gander Green Lane to draw 2-2 with goals from Brundle’s 36th minute penalty, and Schmoll’s 87th minute leveller – all that after Taubakhsh was sent off nine minutes from time.
But it’s still only one win for Dover now from their opening thirteen games. But this was the night when Dover can thank leaders Leyton Orient for a thunderous 5-1 at Braintree to send the Essex side rock bottom.
Bromley took the bragging rights back up the A2 after they beat Ebbsfleet United at Stonebridge Road. The visitors raced into a 2-0 lead through Ogedi-Uzokwe and Sutherland’s 31st minute penalty. Powell then pulled one back for the Fleet in first half stoppage time but that’s as close as the home side got.
In the BOSTIK South Eastern division, Hythe Town didn’t hang around in their game with Faversham Town at Reachfields. Sammoutis put Sam Denly’s side ahead inside the first minute before Campbell and Neita gave the home side a healthy 3-1 lead (Grant had equalised for Faversham after five minutes) and when Harry Goodger reduced the arrears to 2-3, Ray Turner’s side sensed the comeback was well and truly on.
Ansah however had other ideas and restored the home side’s two goal lead before Cooper pegged the home side back again to 4-3. It was left to Kinnear to finally seal the points as he made it 5-3 with just nine minutes left but still the visitors weren’t finished as Goodger’s spot kick three minutes from time set up the grandstand finish but Hythe held on to win 5-4.
Amazingly it finished 5-4 too at Southwood but here it was the visitors prevail on a night to remember for Jake Embery. Herne Bay took the early advantage through Embery. Sadly, it was a lead they held for just three minutes as Chapman levelled for the Rams before Smith put Lloyd Blackman’s side in front just past the half hour, before the same player doubled the lead from the spot.
In a repeat of the first half Embery was first on the scoresheet to reduce the deficit to 2-3 before Chapman’s second and Ramsgate’s fourth re-established the two goal cushion only for Gorham to again cut the lead to one. Embery then completed his hat trick on 81 minutes before sensationally winning the game for Herne Bay in the final minute.
Phoenix more than made up for the disappointment of being booted out of the FA Cup as they sealed three league points and they enjoyed a great start against Greenwich Borough. Duah-Kessie gave the home side a tenth minute lead which was cancelled out by Taiwo penalty ten minutes later. Alfie Aldridge put Phoenix back in front before Dua-Kessie netted his second and Sports third just before the break. Greenwich did what they had to at the start of the second half as Deakin pulled a second back but that’s as close as they got.
Sittingbourne started well at Homelands when you remember they won on Guernsey on Sunday afternoon and took the lead against Ashford through Fagg midway through the first half. It was a lead that the Brickies held until the hour when Gnahore levelled for the home side.
Sevenoaks Town’s tale of woe continued as they fell behind at the Belmont to Smith’s goal on the half hour that gave Whitstable Town the lead. Saunders saw red for the home side midway through the second half and how much did that have to do with Johnson-Cole’s last gasp equaliser.
Meanwhile in the SCEFL, there were wins for Cray Valley, Glebe and Sheppey United.
Cray Valley recovered from their FA Cup weekend exit as goals from Edgar and Flack sealed the points at Corinthian for whom Billings pulled one back.
Glebe were indebted to Singh’s 90th minute winner to beat AFC Croydon by the same 2-1 scoreline – an own goal put Glebe in front before Kaffo levelled, but the game of the night was on the Isle of Sheppey, where the Islanders edged out Chatham Town in a five goal thriller.
Mahoney put the visitors in front before Babbington Akhazzan replied for Sheppey. Babbington then seemingly sealed the win on 88 minutes only for Vines in stoppage time as the Chats missed the chance to reduce Beckenham’s lead at the top…
