Blue Square Bet South league leaders, Welling United, make their second trip to the West Country this week when visiting Truro City.
Following Tuesday’s disappointing defeat at Bath City, Welling will be keen to get their promotion challenge back on track.
Earlier in the season, Welling won an incredible game at Park View Road. The Wings looked in total control when Loui Fazakerley put them ahead and it appeared to be just a matter of time before they would score a second.
However, the Welling supporters were stunned when the visitors scored twice in as many minutes. Kieffer Moore scored the first and created the second for Andy Watkins. Moore notched his second, and Truro’s third still before half time.
A scramble in the penalty area just before the hour mark resulted in player manager Lee Hodges taking down Ross Lafayette in front of an open goal. Hodges was dismissed and Joe Healy stepped up to convert the spot kick. Sam Mott had made a great save to keep the scores level before Anthony Acheampong headed home for Welling’s winner in the 95th minute.
Last season at Treyew Road, Andy Pugh put the Wings ahead before veteran Barry Hayles equalised. Second half goals by Loick Pires and Jamie Day put the visitors in command before Barry McConnell’s injury time consolation goal.
Hopefully, this week’s heavy rain in Cornwall will abate in time for the pitch to dry out and the game to go ahead.
