It was a tough first National League South game of the season for Welling United as they crashed heavily away to Truro City in squally winds.
Ten Welling players made their full league debuts, albeit a couple of them second time around, and they went behind in just the sixth minute. Adam Porter played Rocky Neal in behind and he clipped it over the onrushing Ben Winterbottom.
Tyler Harvey shot on the turn and Winterbottom pushed it over before the Welling goalkeeper held a long shot from Ryan Law.
More disappointing defending allowed Truro a second goal when Ed Palmer was allowed to meet a deep free kick with a low volley that flew in at the far post. Two minutes later, it became three when Palmer knocked it down for Porter and his shot found the bottom corner.
Shortly before the thirty minute mark Welling pulled one back. Cameron Green played a one-two with Will Wood before firing inside the far post.
Five minutes before half time, Truro struck again when Connor Riley-Lowe picked out Porter with a cross and he had plenty of time and space tom fire home. Matters got even worse for the Wings in injury time when Harvey and Neal combined well to open up the Welling defence again and the former slotted home.
After the break, Welling had more of the wind advantage and created some openings of their own. Wood had a shot deflected wide before Kareem Isiaka headed wide when meeting TJ Bramble’s hooked cross. Antony Papadopoulos drove across the face of goal but nobody was on hand to finish before a Truro break ended with Winterbottom making an excellent save from Harvey.
James Vaughan and Isiaka were both off target for the Wings but they did score a consolation with three minutes remaining. Bramble was tripped in the penalty area and Papadopoulos smashed it home from the spot.
New manager Danny Bloor will have much to consider over the next week before Welling entertain Hemel Hempstead Town, and he will be looking for a reaction.
