Welling United’s F.A Trophy run was ended with defeat at Yeovil Town.
Visiting the team in second place in the National League was always going to be a tough task but it was the way that Welling conceded that concerned Welling manager Mark Goldberg most.
“It took a really scrappy, horrible goal to concede that actually got them ahead.” he moaned.
“We looked like we were in awe of them rather than playing the way that we know that we can play. I think that the last ten minutes of the first half we were slightly better. We thought at half time, there’s only one goal in it. Let’s not concede, you never know what can happen.”
He continued “The second goal looked an extremely soft goal but going in the dressing room after the game, Joe Anderson and all the players are saying that he was clearly pushed as the ball went into the box and it should have been a free kick to us so as much as I was upset and was screaming and shouting about the way that we conceded the second goal, and the timing, the referee didn’t help us there.
“Their third goal, which I thought was offside but maybe Rob Swaine played him on, but again a very, very soft goal to give away. Suddenly, you’re three-nil down and it’s a very hard old task to come back from that so a big disappointment.
“I’m glad that we didn’t capitulate in any way and we finished stronger than we started. We didn’t play it right today. We conceded sloppy goals. It’s a big disappointment to be out of the Trophy but at least we’ve come away without any embarrassment which it might have been if our attitudes weren’t right.
“I don’t that there was a lack of effort out there and we can all question formations and things like that but you can’t legislate for the fact that the goals conceded were the biggest problem today, and we showed a lot of resilience.”
During the week, Goldberg signed Korrey Henry and Dipo Akinyemi. Henry played at Yeovil but Akinyemi was cup-tied having represented Braintree Town in the previous round. The Welling manager is looking forward to seeing what they will bring to the team and said “I’m really pleased to get Korrey in and I’m really pleased that Dipo is going to be available from next week.
“I’m sure that they’re going to be a great asset for us, not just for this year but for next year as well as their on eighteen month contracts, which I’m delighted about.”
