Gillingham’s transfer deadline day has seen three players depart the club today.
Defender Gabriel Zakuani and young midfielders Bradley Stevenson and Miquel Scarlett have all left the club.
33 year old Zakuani made 69 appearances for the Gills since he signed for the Priestfield club.
Talking to the club’s website, Gills manager Steve Evans said: ” “It goes without saying my respect and admiration for Gabby is enormous but this is a kid who has just returned to fitness and is desperate for almost immediate first-team action and given the recent recruitments we have signed and given what we are trying to do, Gabby felt it was important for him to go and play and continue his career.
“There is no doubting his ability, his tenacity, his desire and commitment that he has given to Gills, and that I watched many times live when supporting Peterborough United and he was a talisman in that magnificent side at Posh.
“We wish Gabby and his family, who we all know, every success moving forward.”
His contract was ended by mutual consent between the player and the club
Canterbury-born Stevenson struggled to break into the first team during his time at the club. After coming through the youth setup in Medway he made two EFL Trophy appearances but never played a league game.
Stevenson spent most of his professional time at the club on loan with two spells at Hastings United and one each at Cray Wanderers, Tonbridge Angels and Margate.
Fellow midfielder Scarlett was another player to only play for the club in the EFL Trophy. The 18 year old also made one appearance int he FA Youth Cup.
Speaking of the departing midfielders, Evans said: “Since I joined the club both lads have conducted themselves in an exemplary fashion and we wish both of them, individually, success as they go about securing a new club for their future.”
There is no sign yet as to where the three players will sign next.
