Kent captain James Tredwell remains optimistic about England’s One Day chances in India after they lost their final warm up game.James Tredwell

Tredwell was the star with the ball as England lost their second warm up game in a week, losing to Delhi by six wickets, taking 2 for 49 in his nine overs.

England seemed to have posted a defendable score after recording an imposing target of 294 for 5 in their 50 overs with Ian Bell once again impressing with the bat, scoring 108, with Eoin Morgan chipping in with 52.

However, it was once again the bowling that let England down as Delhi reached their target with nine balls and six wixkets to spare.

Tredwell was the main bowler to come out of the game with any real credit as the likes of Steven Finn, Jade Dernbach, Stuart Meaker and Chris Woakes failed to threaten the Delhi batting line up.

Despite back to back warm up defeats, Tredwell remains confident his side can go on and win the five match One Day International series against India, starting with the First ODI in Rajkot on Friday:

“The result is irrelevant and doesn’t mean a great deal in the great scheme of things, but equally we would have liked to have come out of these games with better performances.”

“It’s what we do from now that’s the important thing. It’s great that the lads have had good time in the middle. Clearly the batters have got some good scores under their belts after what we would openly say was an average performance in the first game.”

“We need to make some improvements in the next couple of days. We didn’t hit our lengths consistently enough to build pressure over periods of time. That’s what it boils down to.”

“To be able to turn it around in the next couple of days going into the first ODI is crucial. We all have massive pride in our performances so when things don’t go to plan it’s disappointing. We can build on that disappointment and put it right going into the first game.”

Tredwell admitted that the visitors were finding it difficult to adjust to the new ODI rules after they lost back-to-back warm-up matches against India ‘A’ and Delhi here respectively.

The new ICC rules make it mandatory for the teams to have five fielders inside the circle and use two new balls from each end.

“It was certainly not an ideal start but more than the result, we were looking about executing our plans. The new ODI rules were a bit difficult and we were spinning our heads around it,” said Tredwell at the post-match press conference.

“The first match in Rajkot will be very important and it will be nice to play in venues which are warmer than Delhi,” he added.

Tredwell conceded that the bowlers need to lift their game after being hit by batsmen from the second string Indian side.

“We will certainly not trying to blast them off with our pace but we need to bowl straight.”

Tredwell is expected to feature in all five games against India with Graeme Swann rested for the series and will then travel on with England as they head to New Zealand in February.
