Kent’s James Tredwell has joined Sussex on a one-month loan, and could make his debut in their Division One match against Yorkshire tomorrow.
The off-spinner will only represent Sussex in the LV= County Championship, meaning that he will still be available for selection for Kent in any NatWest T20 Blast matches.
The one-month deal officially commenced yesterday (Saturday 15 June 2014), and can be extended after the first month. Kent also have the right to recall him at any point during his loan, with prior agreement from the ECB.
Kent and Sussex are due to meet in a NatWest T20 Blast match at Canterbury on Friday night, meaning that Tredwell could line up against his new loan teammates the day after playing alongside them in the four-day game with Yorskhire at Arundel, which will run from Monday to Thursday.
Tredwell, 32, is a regular for England in their limited-overs sides, but has found his four-day opportunities at Kent limited this season, losing his place in the side to 21-year-old Adam Riley, who has impressed with the ball in his place, taking 19 wickets at an average of 29.00 in the seven Championship games he has played this year.
Ashford-born Tredwell has not featured in Championship cricket for Kent since their opening four-day match of the season – a 125-run loss against Worcestershire in which he took match figures of 3-137, however he will be hoping the opportunity for him to play more four-day cricket will continue to help push his claims for an international place.
Following that game against Worcestershire, Tredwell was dropped to work on his technique, Kent Head Coach Jimmy Adams saying at the time: “We have decided to give Treddy some time away from the spotlight of first-team cricket to concentrate on some technical modifications as he re adjusts to Championship cricket after a winter of ODIs and T20s.”
The off-spinner has featured more than 50 times for England across all three forms of the game, including holding one Test cap, earned against Bangladesh in 2010. He has picked up more than 350 First Class wickets in his career.
Speaking about the loan move, Tredwell said: “I am delighted to be provided with this opportunity to play Championship cricket.
“I am looking forward to joining up with Sussex at Arundel, but also continuing to play a part in Kent’s good Twenty20 Blast campaign.”
He also separately told the Sussex County Cricket Club website: “It’s a great opportunity for me to join up with a club like Sussex who I have admired for a long time throughout my career.
“I’ve played with a lot of the guys over the years and played age group cricket with the likes of Matt Prior and Carl Hopkinson so it’s an honour to join up with them again.
“I’m really looking forward to getting some red ball cricket under my belt.”
