Kent captain James Tredwell was a happy man after guiding his side to victory in a tight encounter at Canterbury on Wednesday night.
Heavy rain had delayed the start of the YB40 clash with Worcestershire at the St Lawrence Ground and in the end it was the Spitfires that came out on top of the 25 over game.
Tredwell led the way with a blistering 42 not out, whilst Geraint Jones posted 30 as the Spitfires reached their target of 111 with three wickets to spare.
However, it wasn’t plain sailing for Tredwell and his side having reduced Worcestershire to 110 for 9 in their 25 overs, clawing their way over the line after struggling themselves at 45 for 6 and the Kent skipper admitted after the game how he was pleased to have seen his side show the character to get their third win in the YB40:
“We obviously came off thinking we’d done pretty well, but the wicket did something all the way through, so we equally knew it was going to be quite a tough chase, though not quite that tough.”
“It was a bit nervy when I came in, we were toying with what to do on the balcony, did we chuck someone in to have a swing?”
“Thankfully mine and Jonesy’s partnership settled the nerves a bit and got us over the line. We’ve started this competition pretty well. Hopefully we can continue the momentum into Championship cricket.”
Despite it being a game of few boundaries, Tredwell believed the crowd watching in the ground at home on Sky will have been happy with what they saw:
“Sometimes those short low-scoring games can be the most entertaining – that was the way on the night.”
“We’ve played good cricket in a tough scenario so that’s another tick in the box for our group.”
The highlight of the night were two superb catches from Sam Billings and Ben Harmison with Tredwell pleased how his side are doing in the field:
“These last four one day games we’ve fielded out of our skins and won wickets purely with our fielding.”
“If we do that then we make it easier on the bowlers and they appreciate it. It’s a real telling feature of our game in one day cricket and we need to keep it up in the games to come.”
Kent now switch their attention to the LV County Championship game against the same opponents starting at Canterbury on Friday and Tredwell believes his side will take confidence from Wednesday night’s win:
“I think it gives us some momentum. They’re going to be hurting as a group. It doesn’t mean a great deal but we’ve got one over on them already and hopefully we can take it into Friday and start the Championship game really well.”
“We’re in similar scenarios, us and them, in the way we’ve started the season. We’d have liked more results, no doubt, we’ve put it behind us with three wins and hopefully that confidence will carry through into the Championship.”
Play is scheduled to start at 11am on Friday with ticket information available from www.kentcricket.co.uk
