Kent and England spinner James Tredwell says he had not noticed any issues with Kevin Pietersen in the England dressing room.

Cricket players, fans, pundits and commentators were stunned earlier in the week, when the news broke that Pietersen’s England career had come to an end, after he was omitted from the England squads for the limited overs tour of the West Indies and the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.

The South African-born batsman is known for his at times divisive character in the dressing room, alongside his brilliant batting, but former Kent captain Tredwell, a teammate of Pietersen’s in both ODIs and T20s for England, said that he has not experienced any problems with him.

Speaking to KSN, Tredwell said: “I’ve come through the system with Kev – when he first qualified as English was the first time I was on the National Academy. I fortunately captained that tour of which he was a major part of and scored a lot of runs, so I’ve always had a lot of mutual respect for him. He was brilliant on that tour.

“He’s got his own ways and his own way of going about things, and I’ve never seen that as being a huge issue”, Tredwell said. “But, obviously I’ve never been a big part of the management group [for England] in trying to manage the different people you have in the dressing room, and I guess that is part of what’s been going on behind the scenes.

“As a player in the dressing room, I’ve not noticed a great deal of issues, but you don’t really know what goes on behind closed doors”, he added.

Tredwell went on to admit that morale was low when he arrived in Australia prior to the final test, when he was included in the squad but did not make the final team, but said that was natural for a side that were on their way to a series defeat.

“I arrived midway through the fourth test and The Ashes were gone. Morale is going to be low at that point, and you’re going to have a little bit of tension in the dressing room – there was probably a bit of tension compared to other times when I’ve joined the squads and been part of squads, but I think that was more of the scenario that the team were in.

“I didn’t recognise any personal conflict or anything like that. I don’t want to talk out of turn, either, but equally I didn’t really notice a great deal, and if I’m honest, my interaction with Kev in that last bit of the Test tour was really positive, certainly on a cricketing note.”
